Man found dead beneath ATV on highly technical off-road route in Colorado
A man from Colorado’s Front Range was found dead beneath an ATV in Summit County on August 31.
According to a report from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the man crashed on Glacier Ridge, described as a popular off-roading area near Georgia Pass. For those familiar with off-roading, this route carries an ‘8’ rating, traveling about five miles over a two to four hour span while reaching an elevation of 12,240 feet. An ‘8’ rating (on a scale of 10) is described by Trails Offroad to be in a category of ‘severe’ difficulty with vehicle damage and rollovers probable. Exposure is also a concern along higher stretches of this specific route.
Rescue teams responded after receiving an emergency satellite message that reported the man was under the ATV And non-responsive, not breathing and without a pulse. After the man was located, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation of the crash indicated that the man was riding alone and had some sort of accident that resulted in the ATV rolling on top of him. He was wearing a helmet and had other proper equipment with him for the time. The exact time of the crash is unknown.
The man’s body was successfully recovered and transferred to the local coroner’s office. No identifying information has been released about the man at this time, aside from that he lived somewhere on the Front Range.
“Satellite messengers are an important tool for backcountry safety. While this incident ended in tragedy, satellite messengers are often the only way to summon help when outside of cell service,” said Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons. “In this case, passersby used their devices to get help and remained on scene to assist with the investigation. They did everything they could, and their efforts are commendable.”
Condolences go out to those impacted by this man’s tragic death.
