36 inches of snow hits oft-treacherous mountain pass in Colorado

Big snow is closing out the month of December in Colorado, with widespread snow totals in the double-digit range having fallen over the past few days.

The most snow to be reported in the last 72 hours according to the National Weather Service was in the Park Range (east of Steamboat Springs) and on Berthoud Pass (south of Winter Park). Both of these areas got about 36 inches of snow. Meanwhile, peaks in the area of Loveland Pass got about 30.

Other spots where deeper accumulation occurred include mountains southwest of Aspen and those just east of Grand Junction. About 18 inches fell on some peaks in this part of the state. The San Juans of southwest Colorado got about 12 inches on some peaks, while nearly all of southern Colorado and most of the Front Range got missed entirely.

All of that snow has proven to be a great thing for Colorado’s snowpack, with statewide snowpack now at 97 percent of the norm for the date, up from 84 percent prior to these storms. It’s also worth noting that the Steamboat Springs area – where most of the snow recently fell – was an area that was really struggling to accumulate snowpack thus far this year, with recent snow bringing snowpack in this area up to 98 percent of what’s typical for December 30 opposed to the 75-ish percent of snowpack norm that it was at last week. Steamboat Resort reports 14 inches of fresh snow over the last three days.

It’s looking like a bit more snow is on the way later this week, too, with OpenSnow predicting that the Steamboat area will get about 13 inches over the next five days (find their full resort breakdown here).
