Gen Z moving into Colorado while a major older generation moves out
A recent report from This Old House examined migration data across the United States, revealing that Colorado saw a total net migration of -3,374 for 2022.
The top generation moving into Colorado was Gen Z (people aged 18 to 24), with a net inflow of 8,436 residents. The top generation moving out of Colorado ended up being Baby Boomers (people aged 55 to 74), with net outflow of -11,873 residents.
To create the report, the This Old House Reviews Team analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey one-year estimates for 2012, 2021, and 2022. They also calculated net migration figures by generation across 186 major U.S. cities.
The researchers calculated inflow, the number of people moving into the city (from a different state) or state, and outflow, the number of people moving out of the city (to a different state) or state, for each city for each year to determine net migration.
Overall, the study found that Gen Z is moving into large cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago while older generations are leaving. Older generations are instead moving to southwestern states such as Arizona, Texas, and Nevada. Research also shows that the top motivation for Americans to move in 2022 was to improve their housing situation.
