Man dies after getting bitten by venomous lizard in Colorado

A Lakewood man has died after he was bitten by a pet Gila monster lizard, according to CBS News, with the last time a human died from a Gila monster bite being in 1930.

The 34-year-old was bitten by one of his two pet Gila monsters on February 12, ultimately getting hospitalized and dying four days later.

Gila monsters are native to the southwestern United States and are relatively popular pets when it comes to lizards. While not native to Colorado, they’re the largest native lizard species in the United States, able to reach up to 22 inches in length.

No antivenom is available for treatment of a Gila monster bite.
