Skier dead after attempting to jump over highway in Colorado
A 21-year-old male skier has died due to injuries sustained while performing an apparent stunt on US Highway 40 in the area of Colorado’s Berthoud Pass.
According to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, the preliminary investigation points to the skier attempting to clear the width of the roadway during a jump, but coming up short. The incident took place at about 3 p.m. on April 9, temporarily impacting traffic flow on the high country route for several hours.
With the accident taking place just west of the Berthoud Pass Summit, authorities noted that it’s believed the skier lacked the speed and distance necessary to clear the gap, landing on highway pavement instead. Following the accident, the skier was unconscious and not breathing, with a bystander attempting to perform CPR. The skier was wearing a helmet and other protective gear at the time of the incident.
The identity of the deceased skier nor his official cause of death has been released at this time.
Berthoud Pass is a popular spot for backcountry skiers, connecting the I-70 corridor to Grand County, including Winter Park Resort.
Condolences go out to those impacted by this death.
