Snowmobiler buried in avalanche, rescued by companions
A snowmobiler was caught, carried, and fully buried in an avalanche on a northeast slope in Leroux Creek on Feb. 8. Fortunately, the snowmobiler’s companions were able to execute an impressive rescue.
According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC), the group had planned to avoid avalanche terrain due to the high avalanche danger, which was 4 of 5. However there was poor visibility because of the flat light, and the individual drifted onto a steeper slope without realizing it, triggering the avalanche.
Luckily, the group was able to rescue the individual, as two members had avalanche rescue training and the knowledge and equipment to complete the rescue. The individual was found unconscious, but a member of the group had Wilderness EMT training and cleared snow out of their airway after they regained consciousness. The group then wrapped her in a bivy bag and lit a fire to warm her up.
CAIC explains in an Instagram post about the incident that the close call had a good outcome because the group was prepared. The CAIC also states that “the best thing you can do before you head into the mountains is check the avalanche forecast.”
