The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is warning local residents about a string of break-ins that’s taken place in recent months, involving the theft of jewelry, designer handbags, and cash. Details of the case bear similarities with another string of break-ins that’s been taking place in Arapahoe County this year, with the Arapahoe County break-ins believed to be linked to a greater trend of break-ins occurring nationwide said to involve multiple South American theft groups. A press release on the matter from Boulder County did not make a direct connection to these suspected theft groups.

As far as the Boulder County break-ins go, the sheriff’s office says they’ve been taking place over the last few months and typically involve suspects entering into a master bedroom from the exterior of the home before ransacking the property in search of jewelry, cash, and designer purses.

Meanwhile, in Arapahoe County, nine break-ins at luxury homes have been reported, typically taking place around dinnertime on Friday when homeowners are absent. In those cases, suspects have reportedly stolen about $1 million worth of goods, often breaking into a home by smashing an exterior glass door. A common trend in the Arapahoe County break-ins has been the targeting of homes that back up to “open space, green belts, canals, trails, golf courses, or heavy tree cover.”

According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, they’ve been in communication with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office related to the similarities between cases being investigated.

Neither county has reported injuries to homeowners sustained during these break-ins, as of time of publishing.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office noted that their local cases seem to be similar to others taking place around the nation, in which suspects are said to surveil homes and use some sort of jammer to disrupt home security systems. It’s unclear if the surveillance or signal jamming is happening in Colorado at this time.
