Up to 24 more inches of snow could fall in heavily-populated Colorado region

Winter storm warnings are still underway in parts of Colorado, with 24-plus inches of snow possible in a large portion of the state through Saturday at 5 p.m.

According to mapping from the National Weather Service, Denver is set to get 8 to 12 inches of snow from Friday morning through Saturday evening in the most likely scenario. Meanwhile, Castle Rock gets 12 to 18, Colorado Springs gets 6 to 8, Pueblo gets 6 to 8, and Trinidad gets 12 to 18. Boulder and Estes Park could also get 4 to 6 inches, while Byers and Limon – both located east of Denver could get 12 to 18. And keep in mind – that’s the ‘most likely’ scenario. Expect major impacts when it comes to travel along the Front Range and Eastern Plains. Roads will likely be very difficult to impossible to navigate in many areas of heavy snowfall, according to the National Weather Service, and major closures are expected.

Per usual, the ‘high-end’ snowfall scenario that’s published by the National Weather Service depicts an even wilder scene.

In this scenario, which has a 10 percent chance of coming to fruition, totals in the range of up to 24 inches are much more widespread, including parts of I-25 and I-70. Denver gets 11 inches, Castle Rock gets 18, Colorado Springs gets 10, and Trinidad gets 24. Up to 24 inches are also possible along the stretch of I-25 between Castle Rock and Colorado Springs, which is a heavily-populated and highly-trafficked part of the state.

It’s also worth noting that snowpack in the Arkansas River Basin is currently at all-time recorded highs. Read more about that here.

Regardless of what ends up happening, it’s looking like I-25 south of Denver and I-70 east of Denver will get hammered with powder.

Snowfall should taper off by Saturday morning, but we’ll have to wait and see.
