Wildfire prompts large Colorado brewery to evacuate patrons and staff

Patrons at a popular Colorado Springs brewery got a scare on Thursday, when the facility was evacuated due to a nearby wildfire.

According to a post from Red Leg Brewing Company, patrons and staff were “proactively evacuated” when a blaze sparked a few hundred feet away from their 14,000-square-foot westside facility near the Garden of the Gods. While evacuation orders were not made by officials, the brewery made the call to clear out so that those at the location could make it home safely.

The fire that prompted the decision ultimately grew to about 20 acres and while it was stamped out quickly thanks to a speedy response from firefighting personnel, gusty conditions on a ‘red flag’ day stoked fears that it could grow out of hand.

In a post made later that day, Red Leg Brewing Company thanked firefighting personnel and law enforcement for their quick response, also asking fans of the spot to be patient while smoke damage is assessed.

“We look forward to serving you soon and appreciate your understanding,” read a statement from brewery president and founder Todd Baldwin.

On Friday morning, the brewery announced that they would be open for operations as normal, also posting a photo of a scorched hillside a short distance away.

A 48-year-old man was later arrested for his alleged role in starting the fire.
