Cleveland Browns WR Jerry Jeudy says ‘it’s time to perform’ against the Broncos in Monday’s return
ENGLEWOOD – Cleveland wide receiver Jerry Jeudy is fired up plenty about facing his former team.
Jeudy, who told The Denver Gazette last August he had asked to be traded from Broncos and got his wish last March, talked Friday about his return to Empower Field at Mile High on Monday night.
“You always want to beat the opposing team that you used to play for,’’ Jeudy told reporters in Cleveland. “That’s just the competitive nature of us athletes. … I ain’t circled it, but I definitely seen that it was on the schedule (when it came out in May). Was very excited about it. Now it’s here. Now it’s time to perform. … I just want to dominate every week, so just a week to do that.”
Speaking to TheLandonDemand.com about facing the Broncos, Jeudy said, “I just want to go back up there and whip their” butt.
Jeudy, taken with the No. 15 pick in the 2020 draft out of Alabama, told The Denver Gazette in August he told Broncos coach Sean Payton both before and after last season he wanted to be traded. He got his wish when Denver in March sent him after four seasons to the Browns for 2024 fifth- and sixth-round draft picks.
“It didn’t come out of the blue at all,” Jeudy had told The Denver Gazette. “I’m the one that decided that. I made the decision to come (to Cleveland) and I’m excited with my decision. … I actually came up to (the Broncos) and asked that I wanted a new atmosphere, a new change of scenery. I just wanted to go somewhere else and have a new feel and a new atmosphere.”
With his new team, Jeudy has 45 catches for 645 yards and two touchdowns. The five-year veteran really has come on since quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon injury and Jameis Winston has started the past four games.
In four games with Winston, Jeudy has 24 catches for 379 yards. In the first seven games, with Watson starting, he had 21 receptions for 276 yards.
“Jameis is a great quarterback,’’ Jeudy said. “Just his energy in the locker room, on the field, I just feel like that’s the type of guy you just need around. That’s the type of guy that just motivates everybody around him and keeps everybody on the right track. That’s the type of player you need on the team.”
Jeudy is looking forward to facing Denver star cornerback Pat Surtain II. The two knew each other when growing up in South Florida and were teammates at Alabama from 2018-19 before both were on the Broncos from 2021-23.
“It’s going to be a fun matchup,’’ Jeudy said. “I’ve known Pat since little league, being competing against him down there my whole life. To finally get the opportunity to go against him on this big stage, it’s going to be fun.”
Surtain also welcomes the challenge.
“It’s going to be fun,’’ Surtain said after Friday’s practice at Broncos Park. “It’s going to be like a couple of practices we shared here in the past and practices at Alabama. It’s going to be a lot of good competes.”
Surtain shrugged off Jeudy talking about wanting to “whip” the Broncos.
“I think he’s going to be fired up,’’ Surtain said. “Obviously, I think he’s going to have a lot of juice going, a lot of juice flowing. He’s very competitive.”
Wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who was close with Jeudy on the Broncos and continues to keep in contact with him, is looking forward to seeing him Monday. Sutton is optimistic his hot streak won’t continue at Denver.
“He’s a competitor, man,’’ Sutton said. “I have so much love and respect for Jerry. I think he’s one of the most talented guys I’ve shared the field with. … I wish nothing but many blessings and a lot of highlights coming to him. … But going into this week, I think our defense is going to do what they need to do. He’s got a tough matchup with (Surtain).’’
