Broncos ‘amped up’ to play first Monday Night Football game at home with fans since 2018

The home game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 1, 2018, might not bring back good memories for Broncos fans. Their team blew a 23-13 lead in the final 6 ½ minutes and lost 27-23.

But for one reason, it was memorable. Entering Denver’s game Monday against Cleveland at Empower Field at Mile High, it remains the last time the Broncos played at home before fans on Monday Night Football.

“I can recall that game,’’ said tackle Garett Bolles. “It was a great atmosphere. It’s always fun to play those type of games in those environments.”

Bolles, who was in his second season and got in for all 60 offensive snaps, and wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who as a rookie caught three passes for 51 yards, are the only Denver players remaining from that game. The Broncos head coach then was Vance Joseph, now their defensive coordinator.

The Broncos did get another home Monday night game on Sept. 14, 2020, to open the season. But due to coronavirus pandemic, no fans were permitted to attend the 16-14 loss to Tennessee.

Other than that one, all the Monday night games the Broncos have played since the 2018 one against the Chiefs have been on the road. They lost 27-14 to the Oakland Raiders on Dec. 24, 2018, lost 24-16 to the Raiders on Sept. 9, 2019, lost 17-16 to Seattle on Sept. 12, 2022, lost 19-16 overtime to the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 17, 2022, and defeated Buffalo 24-22 on Nov. 13, 2023.

“I’m very amped up,” cornerback Pat Surtain II, who joined the Broncos in 2021, said of playing in his first Monday night game at home. “I can’t wait I know it’s going to be electrifying out there in front of the Broncos’ fan base.”

The Broncos are 7-5 and in the No. 7 spot in the AFC playoff race, with seven teams making it. The Browns are a meager 3-8 but the game wasn’t flexed off ESPN on Monday because it was deemed a national audience would want to see the Broncos, who feature exciting rookie quarterback Bo Nix and are No. 3 in the NFL in total defense and No. 2 in points allowed.

“I think it’s always special to play on Monday night,’’ Joseph said. “Everyone’s watching. We have a good young team here. Some folks haven’t seen us play. They’ve heard. I think for players, it’s always special to play on Monday Night Football.”

The Broncos’ only previous primetime game this season was a 33-10 win at New Orleans on Thursday Night Football on Oct. 17. But that game was on Amazon Prime, which doesn’t get the audience ESPN does for Monday Night Football.

“It’s nice to be able to be in the position that we’re in right now and battling to continue to keep moving up in these playoff rankings (and) to be able to showcase (the Broncos) the world,’’ Sutton said. “I think everyone with fantasy and with the gambling and stuff, everyone kind of sees just the numbers, but they haven’t really gotten to watch us play. … It’s going to be fun to be able to go out and showcase what we’ve been doing and continue to add to it. … I’m looking forward to being able to play on Monday night.”

Broncos coach Sean Payton said he joked with Sutton about some broadcasters this season who “didn’t know his name or pronounced it wrong.” He said the “A-team” on ESPN of Joe Buck on play-by-play and analyst Troy Aikman will get it right and “these are the games you want to play in.”

Sutton did put on a show the last time the Broncos were on Monday Night Football. In the win over the Bills, he caught eight passes for 53 yards, including an acrobatic 7-yard grab from Russell Wilson in the second quarter on fourth-and-2 that was regarded as one of the best NFL catches of the season.

Wilson is now with Pittsburgh and Nix is Denver’s quarterback. ESPN has been promoting him plenty as he prepares to be on Monday Night Football for the first time.

“We have to continue to be efficient when our moment comes and continue to score touchdowns,’’ Nix said. “That’s what has worked in the past and in a game like this, primetime, that is how you win games.”

Nix threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-6 win over Atlanta on Nov. 17, a performance that assured the NFL the next day didn’t flex the Broncos out of Monday Night Football. They followed that up with a 29-19 win last Sunday in Las Vegas.

“It should be rocking,’’ Broncos wide receiver Lil’ Jordan Humphrey said of the atmosphere Monday night. “We all love to play on primetime TV to be able to show ourselves on national TV with millions of fans watching. So, it’s going to be a great environment, and I can’t wait.”’

Broncos fans have been waiting for six years to see a Monday night game at home in person.
