Agent ‘more than optimistic’ Lil’ Jordan Humphrey will re-sign with Broncos and could play some tight end

The agent for impending free-agent wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey said Friday he is “more than optimistic” his client will re-sign with the Broncos.

Humphrey has spent the past two seasons with Denver coach Sean Payton after also having played for him in New Orleans from 2019-21. Free agency gets underway Monday with the negotiating period and the new league year starts Wednesday, although Humphrey is eligible to re-sign at any point.

“Frankly, I’m more than optimistic because of the relationship and the fact that it just fits the formula,’’ agent Jimmy Gould told The Denver Gazette about his client returning to the Broncos.

Gould said the 6-foot-4 Humphrey, who was listed last season at 225 pounds, has been “gradually” putting on weight to be available to potentially also play some tight end for the Broncos. He has been working out in the Dallas area.

“He probably within the next two weeks will be at 235,’’ Gould said. “You won’t see it on him. It will be muscle. He’s winning his workouts. … He wants to do whatever is required to win.”

Humphrey last season caught 31 passes for 293 yards while playing nearly 50% of Denver’s offensive snaps. He is regarded as the team’s best blocking wide receiver.

Humphrey hasn’t played any snaps on special teams in his two Broncos seasons, but Gould said his client would like that to change in 2025. Humphrey played 45 special teams snaps for New Orleans in 2021, Payton’s final season there.

“He wants to play special teams,’ Gould said. “He wants to block.”

Humphrey has signed one-year minimum contracts in each of the past two seasons, and the minimum in 2025 in his classification is $1.17 million. However, Gould declined to discuss any salary specifics.

Gould, who has known Payton well for more than 25 years, said he met with the coach for 2 ½ hours Feb. 28 at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. He said that while Humphrey was discussed, the bulk of the conversation consisted of catching up and Payton getting to meet his son.

Gould, 76, has been an agent for 30 years. His son Dylan Gould, 32, is a lawyer and also serves as co-agent for Humphrey.

“Sean took the time to reminisce and to meet my son,’’ Gould said. “My son had wanted to meet him. … We talked about life and sports.”

When Payton coached New Orleans, Gould also had as a client running back Travaris Cadet, who played for the Saints from 2012-14 and 2015-16. Gould said he has “huge respect” for the longtime coach.

“I think he’s a winner,’ Gould said of Payton who led the Broncos last season to their first playoff berth since 2015. “There’s no other way to look at it and they’re fortunate to have him in Denver. He’s a visionary. I’m a big believer (in Payton). … Sean Payton is so exceptional as a coach because he knows how to get the best out of people.”

After Payton took over the Broncos in February 2023, they signed Humphrey on March 7, a week before free agency started since he had been released by New England and was a street free agent. He then re-signed with Denver last March.

“Lil’Jordan is incredibly comfortable with (Payton) and trusts him and wants to continue to be part of the building (of the Broncos),’’ Gould said. “And I think Sean Payton feels that way. They just have a huge amount of respect for each other.”
