Chris Tomasson’s mock draft: Where will Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders land? What will Broncos do?
Gary Glick’s 69-year-old record is safe but Bo Matthews’ 51-year-old mark isn’t.
Miami quarterback Cam Ward will be taken by Tennessee with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft Thursday night in Green Bay, so the late Glick, a Colorado State defensive back selected No. 1 by Pittsburgh in 1956, will maintain a sole spot as the highest-drafted player from a Colorado school. But University of Colorado star cornerback-receiver Travis Hunter is the favorite to go No. 2 to Cleveland, which would result in tying Matthews’ mark for being the highest-drafted Buffaloes player.
“I think it’s great,’’ said Matthews, a running back who went No. 2 to the San Diego Chargers in 1974. “Travis is going to be a great player. He’s a superstar already and he hasn’t even played in the NFL.”
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen what will happen with Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who at one point was being talked about as a possible No. 1 pick but now looks to be sliding. And fans in Colorado will be eager to see if the Broncos might trade up or down or stay at No. 20 in the first round.
Here’s how the first round might unfold:
1. TENNESSEE TITANS: CAM WARD, QB, MIAMI
The only other Miami quarterback to go No. 1 was Vinny Testaverde by Tampa Bay in 1987. He didn’t fully live up to expectations but played 21 NFL seasons. So check back to see if Ward is still in the league in 2045.
2. CLEVELAND BROWNS: TRAVIS HUNTER, CB-WR, COLORADO
Hunter has made it clear he wants to play every snap on offense and defense. But how about special teams as well? Perhaps he also can return punts and kickoffs and be the gunner on Browns punts.
3. NEW YORK GIANTS: ABDUL CARTER, EDGE, PENN STATE
So much for the Giants taking a quarterback. How about a guy to gobble up quarterbacks? Carter had 12 sacks in 2024 for Penn State and will try to put up Lawrence Taylor-like numbers in the NFL once the Giants turn him loose.
4. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: WILL CAMPBELL, OT, LSU
The Patriots need a big guy to protect second-year quarterback Drake Maye. The 6-foot-6, 324-pound Campbell grew up on a farm in Louisiana and, yes, he’s country strong.
5. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: ASHTON JEANTY, RB, BOISE STATE
That groan you hear is from the Broncos, who have been enamored with Jeanty, who rushed for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns last season. He will be a lot better than running back Leonard Fournette, who went No. 4 to the Jaguars in 2017.
6. LAS VEGAS RAIDERS: ARMAND MEMBOU, OT, MISSOURI
Membou grew up in Kansas City, home of the AFC West rival Chiefs. The athletic Membou now will face the likes of defensive tackle Chris Jones, and Chiefs fans might not like it.
7. NEW YORK JETS: TYLER WARREN, TE, PENN STATE
The Jets have a lackluster group of tight ends, including one named Stone Smartt. What really would be smart would be a selection of Warren, who caught 104 passes for 1,233 yards in 2024.
8. CAROLINA PANTHERS: JALON WALKER, EDGE, GEORGIA
The versatile Walker moved around so much on defense in college that he said, “I’m at my best being a chess piece.” He would be a welcome piece for the Panthers, who have been victims of checkmate a lot lately, having won just seven games over the past two years.
9. NEW ORLEANS: SHEDEUR SANDERS, QB, COLORADO
The Saints might need to use their time on the clock to call Deion Sanders and see if he’s OK with this pick. No doubt Daddy Deion would approve with Derek Carr having injuries and not likely to be a long-term piece in New Orleans.
10. CHICAGO BEARS: MASON GRAHAM, DT, MICHIGAN
Don’t run into the 6-3, 306-pound Graham because he doesn’t miss tackles. He would be an ideal Monster of the Midway.
11. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: KELVIN BANKS JR., OT, TEXAS
The 49ers had the oldest starting offensive line in the NFL last season, and that included future Hall of Famer Trent Williams, who will turn 37 in July. It’s time to bring in some youngsters for the rebuilding 49ers.
12. DALLAS COWBOYS: MATTHEW GOLDEN, WR, TEXAS
It doesn’t take long for Golden to get from his college campus to Dallas. It also doesn’t take long for Golden to run 40 yards, having clocked the fastest time in the combine among receivers at 4.29 seconds.
13. MIAMI DOLPHINS: WILL JOHNSON, CB, MICHIGAN
Influential agent Drew Rosenhaus went on a Florida television station and said his best guess is the Dolphins will take Johnson. One figures this isn’t a stab in the dark by the agent who has negotiated more than $7 billion of NFL contracts.

14. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS, COLSTON LOVELAND, TE, MICHIGAN
Loveland did a lot more blocking than catching due to Michigan preferring to keep the ball on the ground. Now, some big-time receiving numbers could come his way in the pass-happy NFL.
15. ATLANTA FALCONS, MIKE GREEN, EDGE, MARSHALL
Marshall has had three skill players selected in the first round of the draft in wide receiver Randy Moss and quarterbacks Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich, but never anybody on defense. Say hello to the guy who led college football with 17 sacks last season.
16. ARIZONA CARDINALS, TETAIROA MCMILLAN, WR, ARIZONA
The Cardinals have plenty of fans at their home games cheering for the road team. Drafting a guy from Arizona might help at least a little in that regard.
17. CINCINNATI BENGALS, DERRICK HARMON, DT, OREGON
With their high-powered offense and shaky defense, the Bengals’ best chance to win games will be to outscore foes. But adding Harmon perhaps could at least help them hold foes to under 40 points.
18. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS, GREY ZABEL, G, NORTH DAKOTA STATE
Selecting a guard doesn’t excite a lot of draft parties, but the Seahawks sure need one. Zabel can help protect new quarterback Sam Darnold, who can be shaky under pressure.
19. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS, JIHAAD CAMPBELL, LB, ALABAMA
Lavonte David is two away from becoming the third player in team history to appear in 200 games, but he is 35. Campbell just turned 21 and is primed to continue the team’s strong linebacker history.
20. DENVER BRONCOS, OMARION HAMPTON, RB, NORTH CAROLINA
In 2021, Denver selected running back Javonte Williams from North Carolina in the second round and he responded with 903 yards as a rookie. Well, Hampton is better than Williams out of college and can provide Sean Payton with the elite back he covets.
21. PITTSBURGH STEELERS, JAXSON DART, QB, MISSISSIPPI
The Steelers are hoping to select a backup quarterback, with the thinking Aaron Rodgers eventually could show up to start. If Dart has to be the starter as a rookie, that might be the end of Mike Tomlin’s streak of 18 straight non-losing seasons.
22. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS, LUTHER BURDEN III, WR, MISSOURI
The Chargers have brought back receiver Mike Williams, who had all of 21 catches last season with the Jets and Steelers. They can do better, and Burden would be an intriguing addition.
23. GREEN BAY PACKERS, JAHDAE BARRON, CB, TEXAS
The Packers just might trade big-salaried cornerback Jaire Alexander. The heady and experienced Barron, who spent five years in college, would be ready to step in.
24. MINNESOTA VIKINGS, MALAKI STARKS, S, GEORGIA
The Vikings blew it in 2022 when they bypassed Notre Dame star safety Kyle Hamilton in the first round while trading down to take Georgia safety Lewis Cine, who was a bust. They can try to make up for that with another Georgia guy.
25. HOUSTON TEXANS, WALTER NOLEN, DT, MISSISSIPPI
The 300-pound Nolen wore No. 2 in college. Well, he is explosive and more fluid than some skill-position players with a single-digit number.
26. LOS ANGELES RAMS, NICK EMMANWORI, S, SOUTH CAROLINA
Few teams have drafted as well in recent years as the Rams, and they now could land a workout warrior. Emmanwori wowed folks at the combine by running the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds and having a 43-inch vertical jump and 11-foot-6 standing broad jump.
27. BALTIMORE RAVENS, KENNETH GRANT, DT, MICHIGAN
The Ravens need to replace retired nose tackle Michael Pierce, who was listed at 355 pounds but looked closer to 400. Grant at 330 pounds might look skinny compared to Pierce but he could be the run stopper Baltimore covets.
28. DETROIT LIONS, MYKEL WILLIAMS, EDGE, GEORGIA
Losing edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson to a broken leg last season might have been what cost the Lions making the Super Bowl. It’s a no-brainer to add another edge rusher, especially after Detroit’s horrific defensive showing against Washington in the playoffs.
29. WASHINGTON COMMANDERS, SHEMAR STEWART, EDGE, TEXAS A&M
Some might be alarmed that Stewart had just 1.5 sacks in 2024 for the Aggies. But he is considered to have great potential and Danielle Hunter turned out OK in the NFL after he had just 1.5 sacks in 2014, his final season at LSU.
30. BUFFALO BILLS, MAXWELL HAIRSTON, CB, KENTUCKY
They call him “Mad Max,’’ which would figure to endear him immediately to Bills Mafia. He’s ultra competitive and had a combine-best time in the 40-yard dash of 4.28 seconds.
31. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS, TREVEYON HENDERSON, RB, OHIO STATE
The Chiefs haven’t had a 1,000-yard back since Kareem Hunt gained 1,327 in 2017. True, they’ve won three Super Bowls since then but it’s starting to become more important in the NFL to have a top-notch back.
32. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES, MASON TAYLOR, TE, LSU
Hall of Fame edge rusher Jason Taylor dominated the Eagles during his career, having six sacks in five games against them. But Eagles fans would like Taylor better if they take his son in the draft.
