Broncos rookie Caleb Lohner agrees to contract terms; Desmond Ridder attending minicamp

Caleb Lohner, a Broncos rookie tight end after having mostly played basketball in college, has agreed to contract terms.

A source said Tuesday that Lohner, taken out of Utah with the No. 241 in the seventh round of the draft on April 26, has agreed to a four-year, $4.309 million contract with a signing bonus of $109,488 and will count $867,372 on Denver’s 2025 salary cap. He is expected to sign after arriving in Denver on Thursday in preparation for Friday’s start of a three-day rookie minicamp.

“That’s great,” Utah tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham told The Denver Gazette after being informed Lohner had agreed to terms. “All of this is really fun for him and his family. It’s nice to kind of see the plan coming to fruition.”

Lohner played basketball in college the past five seasons for BYU, Baylor and Utah. His only season of college football came last season for the Utes, when he caught four passes for 54 yards and all of his grabs went for touchdowns.

Also Tuesday, a source said quarterback Desmond Ridder has accepted an invitation to attend the rookie minicamp as a tryout player. Ridder has played in the NFL the past three seasons, spending 2022 and 2023 with Atlanta and 2024 with Las Vegas. He has appeared in 25 games, with 18 starts, and has thrown for 4,002 yards with 16 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions.

The Broncos are set with their top two quarterbacks in starter Bo Nix and backup Jarrett Stidham. They signed Sam Ehlinger last month to be their third quarterback. He got a one-year, $1.17 million deal, with $300,000 of it guaranteed, and a $167,500 signing bonus. It remains to be seen if Ridder could push Ehlinger for that potential roster spot.

Whittingham said the Broncos also have invited former Utah tight end Cole Fotheringham to rookie minicamp as a tryout player. Fotheringham, after being undrafted in 2022, has spent time since then with the Raiders and Houston. He got into two games with the Raiders in 2023, catching one pass for six yards.

“Cole is a really good blocker,” Whittingham said. “He’s one of the better blocking tight ends you’re going to come across. He’s a super smart kid, hard worker and humble.”

That means there will be three former Utah tight ends at the minicamp. In addition to Lohner and Fotheringham, Thomas Yassmin will be on hand. Yassmin, signed by the Broncos after being underdrafted in 2024, is eligible for the minicamp after spending all of last season on the practice squad.
