Broncos CB Pat Surtain listed as full participant, says injured ankle feeling ‘better’

Denver faces Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday Night Football in Week 16

AURORA — Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain said Monday during a charity event his injured right ankle was “better” after he was listed as a full practice participant.

Surtain partnered with the chicken restaurant Raising Cane’s and the nonprofit “A Precious Child” to gift 100 children’s bikes and helmets to “Colorado children in need to empower them to achieve their full potential,” according to a news release.

“It’s always a great experience to give back to those who are less fortunate. It shows true character to give back,” Surtain said outside a Raising Cane’s location in Aurora. “Denver shows great support to me, so I’ve got to show great support back in a meaningful way. … Just seeing the kids’ smile on their faces, it’s a unique treasure to give back. Because I understand how much this means to them.”

Surtain also discussed his health status following a 31-13 home victory Sunday over the Colts at Empower Field.

Surtain intercepted quarterback Anthony Richardson in the fourth quarter. Colts wide receiver Josh Downs tackled Surtain low, and Surtain appeared to injure his right ankle. Surtain later returned to the game, aggravated the ankle and required help off the field. He did not return.

However, the Broncos released an estimated injury report Monday with no scheduled practice. The team listed Surtain as a full participant. He attended the charity event wearing slide sandals and without a noticeable limp.

“It’s better,” Surtain said when asked about his ankle. “I’m taking it day-by-day. That’s about it.”

The Broncos (9-5) clinched a winning season for the first time since 2016. They are one victory away from guaranteeing a postseason berth. Denver travels for Thursday Night Football in Week 16 at the Los Angeles Chargers (8-6).

“It means a lot. Obviously, we fell short these past couple of years. But having this winning record and having this contagious energy, it means something. You’re talking about an organization that has been through it the past few years. But now we’re starting to get that winning attitude and that winning demeanor. So, having that culture represented in the Broncos organization means a lot.”

Surtain spent time with local families partnered with “A Precious Child” during the bike giveaway. He took photos with gift recipients. Surtain spoke on a microphone to address the event.

“I’m very blessed to be here and I can’t wait to meet y’all,” Surtain said. “This is a special event. Something to bring on the holiday cheer.”
