Just about everything that could go wrong for the Colorado Avalanche did against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday.

Winnipeg scored four goals in the first period, leading to a 7-0 Jets win. The Avs and Jets each entered the game with 104 points, and Winnipeg now owns the second-place spot in the Central Division.

“Everything went wrong. We had a good mindset coming in, I thought,” Colorado star Nathan MacKinnon said.

The four-goal first period was particularly dreadful.

Winnipeg outshot Colorado 15-5 and scored two goals in the first nine minutes of game time.

The Avs also saw defenseman Samuel Girard exit the game in the first period with an upper-body injury. After the game, coach Jared Bednar said Girard is in concussion protocol.

Goalie Alexandar Georgiev allowed all four early goals and was removed for Justus Annunen just 15:17 into the game.

The team left the ice to boos from every corner of Ball Arena at the first intermission.

“I felt like we got outcompeted in the first,” Bednar said. “When I look at it, the first period, we’re getting beat to our net off the boards. We were getting beat off the rush.”

The game didn’t get any better after that, as the Jets scored three goals on Annunen in the second period.

Annunen and Georgiev combined for a .731 save percentage. Winnipeg went 2-for-3 on the power play. Colorado went 0-for-1.

“A lot of mental mistakes were leading to an insane amount of odd-man rushes and goals,” forward Andrew Cogliano said. “Competitively, not where we needed to be. From a lot of angles, we weren’t good enough.”

The blowout is tied for Colorado’s most lopsided defeat of the 2023-24 season. It comes just six days after the Avs allowed seven goals in their 7-4 home defeat against Dallas.

“It’s my job to be concerned when we’re giving up goals, chances that I don’t like, repetitive mistakes. … I get concerned,” Bednar said.

Dallas clinched the Central Division title on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Seattle.

That means Winnipeg and Colorado will face each other in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with home ice to be determined. The Jets are 3-0 against the Avalanche this season.

Between Saturday’s drubbing and the other two defeats, the focus will become Winnipeg very soon.

“I think we got a good taste of the playoffs and what it’s going to be like playing a team like that,” Cogliano said. “There’s a lot to unpack.”

Bednar said, “As good as we think we are as a team, they’re ahead of us. We’ll have to remember it, learn from it, study it and understand it. We’re going to be breaking down Winnipeg for the next week. You have to find solutions.”

WINNIPEG JETS 7, COLORADO AVALANCHE 0

What happened: The Avalanche allowed four goals to visiting Winnipeg in the first period, paving the way for the Jets’ 7-0 blowout win. Alexandar Georgiev allowed the first four goals and was pulled just 15:17 into the game. Colorado is 0-3 against Winnipeg this season.

What went right: Very little went right for the Avalanche. One of the only positives is that they didn’t allow a goal in the third period.

What went wrong: Colorado had no answer for the Jets’ offense. Sean Monahan and Adam Lowry each scored two goals, while Tyler Toffoli, Gabriel Vilardi and Josh Morrissey also scored. The Jets logged just 26 shots but scored on seven of them.

Injury report: Defenseman Samuel Girard suffered an upper-body injury in the first period, forcing him to leave the game. Coach Jared Bednar said Girard is in concussion protocol.

Between the pipes: Georgiev made 11 saves and allowed four goals in his less than a period in goal. Justus Annunen replaced him and made eight saves and allowed three goals.

What’s next: The Avalanche play against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday (TNT).
