Regular season comes to an end for Avalanche team looking to get healthy
ANAHEIM – The regular season for the Colorado Avalanche has come to an end, although if you look at the rosters they’ve been dressing of late, it probably came an end about a week ago.
With their 4-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center on Sunday, it’s now time for the Avalanche to sit and wait. While it’s likely their playoff series will start on Saturday, there is a small chance it could start on Sunday. Either way, the Avalanche will at the very least have the work week to get ready for the Dallas Stars.
And more importantly, get healthy.
Valeri Nichushkin and Artturi Lehkonen sat out against the Ducks with what the team called lower-body injuries. Both were present in the press box during the game so there’s likely not much to be worried about with either of them, but a few other injury recoveries could come down to the wire.
Nathan MacKinnon, Devon Toews, and Cale Makar will likely be ready to go after the team takes Monday off. Questions remain with a few others. Jonathan Drouin and Josh Manson have been skating in non-contact jerseys for the last week so if all goes well, they could join the team for practice. Ross Colton and Ryan Lindgren have not skated since exiting the lineup last week so the status of those two is a little more up in the air.
“They’re all day-to-day now. We’re approaching playoffs,” Jared Bednar said before the team left for this final road trip.
Then you have the ultimate wild card in Gabriel Landeskog, who played two games for the Colorado Eagles over the weekend, picking up his first professional goal in nearly three years.
When the Avalanche hit the ice for game one against the Dallas Stars, they could have as many as 10 players in the lineup that didn’t play in the regular season finale. 10 very important players too, which will make this strange week a very interesting one.
Avalanche 4, Ducks 2
What happened: A team comprising of half NHL players and half AHL players completed a comeback in the third period for the Avalanche.
What went right: It’s always cool to see someone score their first NHL goal and that’s what we got on Sunday. Wyatt Aamodt, who played in his first NHL game on Saturday, picked up his first goal on what was supposed to be a pass to Parker Kelly. It went off the Ducks defender and into the net, giving the 27-year-old a moment he’ll never forget.
What went wrong: Given the roster the Avalanche dressed, for them to come away with a win in this game is only positive.
Avalanche goal scorers: Aamodt (1), Drury (8), Coyle (17), Johnson (2)
Ducks goal scorers: McTavish (22), Colangelo (9)
Between the pipes: Scott Wedgwood finished with 18 saves.
What’s next: Finally, the playoffs. Game one against the Dallas Stars will take place sometime next weekend.
