CU Buffs coach Deion Sanders on Travis Hunter-Shedeur Sanders jersey retirement backlash

BOULDER — It’s been 30 years since Deion Sanders had his No. 2 jersey retired by Florida State.

On Saturday, his son will get the same honor before Colorado’s spring game.

While Sanders had to wait six years after leaving college to get that honor, Shedeur Sanders will get it before taking a snap in the NFL.

Whether it’s Chad Brown or Phillip Lindsay, it’s safe to say that decision hasn’t gone over so well among some Buffaloes legends this week — and far from the same reaction Deion received from the Seminole faithful during his playing days.

“This is the first time I’ve seen it (be a) sore (subject),” Sanders said Thursday. “I don’t know if you know it, but I think every jersey I darn near played in is retired. I’m pretty familiar with this.”

While Sanders’ No. 2 at FSU is technically the only jersey he’s had retired, he is a member of the Atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor and both the Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys — the two most prominent stops in Sanders’ NFL career — do not officially retire any numbers.

But Sanders’ point about that honor going to his son and former star quarterback at CU is succinct.

“The only reason we’re having this discussion is (because) his last name is Sanders,” Coach Prime said. “That’s it.”

While he’s right, there has been little to no backlash over Travis Hunter’s No. 12 also being retired this weekend, that’s due to the fact that the two-way star is coming off a Heisman Trophy-winning season and did things no one has seen for a long time in college football.

Shedeur, on the other hand, put up gaudy numbers on the way to winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award last year, but he also left CU with a 13-11 record as a starter for the Buffs.

Coach Prime sees things a little differently. He looks at all of the changes that have been made since they arrived on campus almost two and a half years ago from improvement in team grade-point average (GPA) to facilities upgrades from the stadium to the locker room to the cafeteria as all byproducts of the notoriety the Buffs had while Hunter and Shedeur were the stars of the team.

“It’s been so many things accomplished at this university, expeditiously, it’s been unbelievable,” Deion said. “I think we should be appreciative, we should be thankful. We’re doing things a little different. There’s a whole lot of things that are brighter and better because someone stands on business and makes it that way.”

While the news may have caused a stir in Boulder this week, it’s just a regular few days in the Sanders family. Deion is confident the backlash hasn’t — and won’t — affect Shedeur.

“He don’t care. He’s a Sanders. Travis don’t either. I don’t either,” the coach said. “I think it’s (going to be) a beautiful day, a blessed day.

“These guys are thinking about the draft, man. They’re thinking about where they’re going to spend their careers. We’re thankful that Buff nation has been gracious, they’ve been wonderful. The last two years has been phenomenal, man. This couldn’t be a better place — that’s why I call it home now.”
