Broncos have 91% chance to make NFL playoffs with victory over Colts, report says

Denver hosts Indianapolis in Week 15 of NFL season at Empower Field

The Broncos are one win away from nearly punching their playoff ticket.

A home victory over the Colts on Sunday at Empower Field gives Denver a 91% chance of reaching the postseason, according to a report on Tuesday from NFL.com’s Ali Bhanpuri and the “Next Gen Stats playoff probability model.”

The analysis suggests that Denver has a 51% chance of making the playoffs with a defeat. On the flip side, Indianapolis has 51% odds of reaching the postseason with a victory over the Broncos, and only a 6% chance with a loss.

The Broncos (8-5) are considered 4-point favorites, according to ESPN Bet. Their remaining schedule: vs. Colts, at Chargers, at Bengals and vs. Chiefs.

The Colts (6-7) need a win to keep their postseason hopes alive. Their remaining schedule: at Broncos, vs. Titans, at Giants and vs. Jaguars.

“We’re not going to be oblivious to how big this game is,” Colts coach Shane Steichen told Indianapolis media on Monday. “But we know that we’ve got to handle our business. We’ve got to prepare the right way and go play a football game. That’s going to be the main message.”

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson returned as the starter after a two-game benching midseason. The No. 4 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft, Richardson over his last three starts has thrown for 533 yards on 43 of 82 completions with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Richardson also rushed 29 times for 141 yards and three touchdowns in that span.

“You’ve got to have a cool head about you as a quarterback just to operate that whole thing. Anthony does a really nice job of that, which I think lets you have that success in those big moments,” Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter told Indianapolis media on Tuesday. “When those moments get bigger, I think it’s important for all of us to sort of maintain a steady level of play. … What I’ve seen out of Anthony is a nice, calm (and) steady demeanor.”

The Colts also have plenty of respect for Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

“He can extend plays. He makes plays on the run,” Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley told Indianapolis media on Tuesday. “Bo Nix is a quarterback that runs a 4.5 (second 40-yard dash). … That’s something we’ve got to be aware of because a lot of his explosive plays come off of that.”

Broncos sign LB Cloyd

The Broncos have signed linebacker K.J. Cloyd to the practice squad, the team said Tuesday.

Cloyd is an undrafted rookie who played four years in the ACC (Louisville/Miami). The 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker had two sacks and seven tackles for loss in his final year of college football. Cloyd also spent time with the Vikings and Giants this offseason.

The Broncos had an open spot on their practice squad after the Lions signed linebacker Kwon Alexander.
