Broncos Q&A: Michael Burton, Broncos fullback, on his Christian baptism and playing his former Chiefs
Every gameday, The Denver Gazette gets to know a Bronco. This week it’s Broncos fullback Michael Burton, a Christian athlete who last year helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl.
The Denver Gazette: What’s it like to play against your guys with the Chiefs?
Michael Burton: “It was nice to see some guys last time (two weeks ago in Kansas City). But in the end it’s a business trip. You’re there to win a football game. That was my mindset going into the game, even though there are some great guys on the other side. I want to win the football game. I’m here to help these guys in any way I can. That’s my mentality. Unfortunately, we fell a little short last time. But now we get to see them again. Whenever I play a former team, it’s a business trip. I want to win that game.”
DG: You got baptized last year. Bigger day for you: Your baptism or winning the Super Bowl?
Burton: “Tough one! It’s got to be the baptism. You’re saved, man! You’re good! That’s the most amazing day. And I was surrounded by friends and family, people who love me and helped me on that journey. For them to be there and see me go through that, it was the most amazing feeling and experience. There’s a sense of freedom and peace being baptized. Such a special day.”
DG: What role does your Christian faith play in your football career?
Burton: “That’s what it all starts. I understand that I’m in this position because of God. He put me here. He’s kept me healthy. He’s blessed me in so many ways, and I’m nothing but thankful. That’s why every time I wake up and come to this awesome building and play the game I love it’s ‘thanks above.’”
DG: New dad here. What’s the best dad advice you’ve received or would give?
Burton: “Be flexible. I have two little girls. You’re going to think and want things to one way, but they’re probably going to go another way. You’ve got to be flexible and communicate with your wife and make sure you guys are on the same page. So I would say flexibility and communication.”
DG: What’s your favorite part of being a dad now?
Burton: “Oh, man. There’s so many awesome things. I love that question. Shoot, it’s seeing them grow. Each day they do or learn or know something different that’s amazing to me. It’s kind of a miracle every day. My older daughter is starting to talk more. My younger daughter just started walking. They’re making these milestones every day. It’s just so special to be part of that. After a long day, you walk in the door and they’re so excited to see you. Maybe I’ve had some travel with the team and I haven’t seen them in a day or two. It’s really special. It’s something you can’t really put into words, being a Dad. The love you have for your kids is a type of love you can’t find anywhere else.”
DG: Do the girls watch your games?
Burton: “They do! They come to the home games. My wife’s got them in the stands, and they’re watching me. It’s really cool.”
DG: Which NFL fullbacks do you study?
Burton: “Growing up, it was Vontae Leach, Lorenzo Neal, Mike Alstott. Those were the guys who played for a long time at a really high level. They were rare at that position. Great longevity, very physical, could do a lot of different things. Then as I got into the league there are a lot of guys playing this position, and they may be younger than me, but I still watch their tape all the time. It’s guys like Kyle Juszczyk, Keith Smith, C.J. Ham. And I’m forgetting a few. But there are a lot of really good fullbacks in the league right now. It’s a great time to play this position.”
