The major events in a major disappointment:

March 8, 2022: Seahawks agree to trade QB Russell Wilson and a fourth-round pick to the Broncos in exchange for QB Drew Lock, TE Noah Fant, DL Shelby Harris, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a fifth-round pick.

April 15, 2022: Wilson and wife Ciara purchase a $25-million home in Cherry Hills Village, believed to be the most expensive single-family home ever sold in the Denver area.

July 26, 2022: Wilson and wife Ciara open the clothing boutique House of LR&C at Park Meadows mall. The store closes less than one year later.

July 27, 2022: Wilson’s entourage arrives at Day 1 of training camp in a pair of SUVs, complete with his own quarterbacks coach, masseuse and a post-practice TikTok video with Ciara.

Sept 1, 2022: Broncos and Wilson agree to a five-year, $245-million contract extension — with $165 million guaranteed — before he’s played a game for Denver.

Sept. 12, 2022: Wilson throws for 340 yards in his Broncos debut, a 17-16 loss to the Seahawks, but Nathaniel Hackett elects to kick a 64-yard field goal that misses wide left.

Sept. 18, 2022: Broncos fans count down the play clock at Empower Field at Mile High as Wilson and Hackett’s offense struggles to start.

Oct. 30, 2022: Wilson leads the Broncos to a 21-17 win over the Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London, reviving playoff hopes after a 2-5 start to his Denver tenure. He does “high knees” on the flight over the Atlantic Ocean.

Dec. 11, 2022: In a 34-28 loss to the Chiefs, Wilson passes John Elway with his 301st career touchdown toss, good for 13th on the NFL’s all-time list.

Dec. 26, 2022: Broncos fire Nathaniel Hackett after the first-year coach was blown out 51-14 by the Rams on Christmas Day, dumping the team’s record to 4-11. The team finishes 5-12.

Dec. 27, 2022: Broncos GM George Paton says he does believe Wilson “is fixable” despite nightmare first season in Denver.

Feb. 3, 2023: Broncos hire Sean Payton as their 20th coach, hoping to revive Wilson’s career.

Sept. 5, 2023: An ESPN report says Payton told Wilson, “Stop kissing all the (expletive) babies. You’re not running for office.”

Sept. 24, 2023: Broncos suffer the worst loss in franchise history, 70-20 to the Dolphins, to fall to 0-3 in the Payton and Wilson era.

Oct. 12, 2023: Wilson throws for only 95 yards in a 19-8 Thursday night loss to the Chiefs, the Broncos’ 16th-straight defeat to the AFC West rivals.

Nov. 26, 2023: Broncos beat the Browns 29-12 to move over .500 (6-5) and into the thick of the AFC playoff race.

Dec. 16, 2023: Payton rips into Wilson on the sideline during a 42-17 loss to the Lions, the coach afterward snapping at reporters, “What I talk to Russell about is none of your business.”

Dec. 27, 2023: Broncos bench Wilson for the final two games of the season, opting for backup QB Jarrett Stidham in what Payton claims is “a football decision.”

Dec. 29, 2023: At his locker at Centura Health Training Center, Wilson says the Broncos asked him after a Week 8 win over the Chiefs to adjust his contract or he would be benched.

Feb. 26, 2024: On a podcast with former Broncos WR Brandon Marshall, Wilson reiterates the team had threatened to bench him midway through his second season in Denver.

Monday: Broncos announce their intentions to release Wilson after March 13.
