The Nuggets had quite a night in Memphis.

Russell Westbrook became the first player in NBA history to record 200 triple-doubles and Michael Malone tied the franchise record for coaching wins against the Grizzlies. Here are three takeaways from Denver’s 122-110 NBA Cup win over the Grizzlies on Tuesday:

1. The Nuggets aren’t celebrating either milestone tonight without big, bounce-back games from Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. Both players struggled in the past two games without Nikola Jokic and Aaron Gordon but saw shots fall in the second game in Memphis. Murray took over a key stretch of the fourth quarter and finished with a team-high 27 points. He made 10 of 20 shots, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range, and added six assists, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks in 36 minutes. Porter, despite going 0 for 4 from 3-point range, finished 11 of 20 from the field for 24 points. He grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded a steal and a block without committing a turnover in 40 minutes of playing time. Without Murray and Porter, it would’ve been a quiet flight back to Denver.

2. Westbrook can make as much noise as he wants on the flight home. Without Jokic, Denver’s best chance to get a win required the team to get out and run, and Westbrook set the tone in that regard. After his coast-to-coast layup in the final seconds, Westbrook finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists. The 36-year-old was an integral part of Denver finishing with a 28-17 advantage in fast-break points. He also was willing to fight against Jaren Jackson Jr. for the portions of the game Denver went with an undersized lineup. There have been highs and lows during Westbrook’s first 13 games with the Nuggets, but the effort and energy have been a constant help to his new team.

3. Malone earned his 432nd win with the Nuggets. The coach had plenty of in-game adjustments to make against the Grizzlies. Peyton Watson fouled out in less than 25 minutes, while Dario Saric and Christian Braun were also in foul trouble for stretches. Vlatko Cancar, who Malone credited with playing well in the first half, did not return after injuring his left knee in the second quarter. To get through it all, Malone went with small lineups and threw in the 3-2 zone the Nuggets have had success with the last couple of weeks. It was a rare game when Malone used an 11-man rotation with each player playing at least five minutes, but it’s what the night required.

NUGGETS 122, GRIZZLIES 110

What happened: The Nuggets led by seven after the first quarter and extended the lead to 68-57 at halftime. Denver started the fourth quarter ahead by 14 and held on to avoid a winless road trip and improve to 8-5.

What went right: Dario Saric delivered in the clutch. With Denver’s lead down to five in the final 30 seconds, Saric confidently took, and made, a catch-and-shoot 3 that put Denver up eight. His second 3 of the night effectively secured Denver’s first win without Nikola Jokic.

What went wrong: The best play of Vlatko Cancar’s season ended in pain. The forward, who missed all of last season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, took off his left leg and threw down a one-handed slam but grabbed his left knee immediately after landing. The team announced Cancar would not return to the game due to a left knee sprain. There wasn’t much of an update postgame, but Malone said he was in good spirits.

Highlight of the night: Christian Braun and Michael Porter Jr. had a bit of a dunk contest late in the first quarter. Braun went first, throwing down a reverse dunk over Jake LaRavia. A possession later, Porter got up for a poster over 7-footer Jay Huff, a former teammate.
