Denver weather: Sunshine early, cloudy later on Thursday with a soggy weekend coming

Sunshine early Thursday will give way to increasing clouds in the afternoon with today still warm with highs in the 70s around metro Denver.

Denver residents can expect increasing clouds, with a high near 75, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. It’ll be breezy, with a south southwest wind between 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.

Tonight A slight chance of rain between 8pm and midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50. South wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

“Very windy conditions of gusts up to 35-40 mph over the eastern plains and dry relative humidities this afternoon could lead to rapid fire spread,” the NWS said. “A Red Flag Warning is in effect 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for parts of the eastern plains thus avoid any outdoor activity that could lead to a spark.”

The NWS said scattered showers are possible for higher elevations and any rainfall is expected to be light. Gusty outflow winds to 40 mph will be possible near the showers. This evening, an isolated shower or two could enter the urban corridor producing little rainfall and wind gusts up to 40 mph.

Tonight, light snow begins for areas above 10,000 feet in elevation.

Rain showers make their way into the forecast starting Friday and lasting through Sunday.

It does not look like it will snow in Denver, but the foothills west of town could see snow down to 7,000 feet Friday night into Saturday.

Here’s the 4-day forecast from the National Weather Service.

Friday: Rain likely after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. South southwest wind 8 to 13 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Saturday: Rain likely, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 50. North wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Sunday: A 40% chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 62.
