Denver weather: Cooler but breezy with red flag warnings posted for Thursday

A red flag warning is in effect until 6 p.m., Thursday as breezy conditions will occur today around Denver, the eastern Plains and the northern Front Range foothills and mountains.

Denver residents can expect sunny skies, with a high near 71, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. It’ll be breezy, with a south southwest wind between 7 to 12 mph, becoming west northwest 17 to 22 mph in the morning.

The foothills and mountains west of Denver will experience higher winds, with gusts pushing near 60 mph on the peaks in Gilpin, Boulder and Larimer counties as a front pushes through Wyoming, clipping Colorado in the process.

“Critical fire conditions will be in place from the foothills across the plains due to very dry conditions and gusty northwest winds,” the NWS said. “Winds may gust up to 50 mph across the plains with some gusts up to 60 mph in the foothills. In addition, there also may be some blowing dust across the plains.”

Tonight it’ll be mostly clear, with a low around 40. North northeast winds to blow between 6 to 11 mph, becoming light and variable. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph.

Here’s the 4-day forecast from the National Weather Service.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 65. South southeast wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Light and variable wind.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 80.
